The day the Hubble Space Telescope was taken to space – level 1
24-04-1990
It is April 24, 1990. The Hubble Space Telescope goes to space. It is 600 kilometers above Earth. People think that the telescope will take very nice pictures of stars, planets, and galaxies. There is a problem.
The first pictures from the telescope aren’t clear. The quality of the pictures is bad. People study the bad pictures. They understand that the mirror of the telescope has an error. The error is very small, but it has a big effect.
People find a solution. They decide to put special instruments on the telescope. In December 1993, astronauts put the instruments on the telescope. The telescope starts to work correctly. The pictures are clear and beautiful.
Difficult words: will (in the future), mirror (a glass which shows your face), error (a mistake), solution (a way to stop a problem), decide (to make a decision).
What was the error that must be fixed with the special instruments in order for the Hubble Space Telescope to take clear and beautiful pictures?
