The day Russia sold Alaska to the United States – level 1
30-03-1867
Russians come to Alaska in 1741. They are interested in fur business.
In the middle of the 19th century, the Russian government wants to sell Alaska to the United States.
Russia needs money because it lost a war in Europe.
Russia also fears that Great Britain could take Alaska in a war with Russia.
In 1867, the Russian government agrees to sell Alaska to the United States for $7.2 million. The US and Russia sign the deal on March 30 1867.
Many Americans don’t like this deal. They believe that Alaska has little value, but they are wrong.
In coming years, Alaska has good value because it has a lot of gold, forests, and fish.
Difficult words: fur (hair on animals), deal (a contract), value (it shows how good and important something is).
What factors led to the decision by the Russian government to sell Alaska to the United States?
