The day of the highest temperature recorded on Earth – level 2
10-07-1913
The highest temperature ever recorded on Earth was 56.7 degrees Celsius. It happened on July 10, 1913, in Death Valley.
Death Valley is a desert in California. It is known for its extreme heat.
The standard conditions for measuring temperature are in the air at a height of about 1.5 meters above the ground. The measuring instrument should be placed in a shaded location away from direct sunlight.
It is interesting that many plants and animals adapted to life in the heat of Death Valley. One of the most interesting is the pupfish. It is a small fish which lives in two locations in Death Valley. The fish can survive in water temperatures of 43 degrees Celsius which would kill most other fish.
Difficult words: heat (a very high temperature), shaded (without direct sunlight), adapt (to change to be able to life in a new situation).
What adaptations allow the pupfish to survive in the extreme heat of Death Valley?
