The day Mother Teresa died – level 2
05-09-1997
Anjeze Gonxhe Bojaxhiu was born in 1910 in Skopje, which is the capital of North Macedonia today. People called her the Angel of Calcutta because, for all her life, she took care of poor people in India.
As a young girl, Anjeze dreamt about life as a missionary. Stories about lives of missionaries fascinated her. When she was 18, she left home and she moved to Ireland.
In 1929, Anjeze arrived in India, where she taught geography. In 1931, she started to live a religious life, and she changed her name after Saint Therese.
Mother Teresa got more and more worried about the poor people in India. She left the school and she began to care of the poor.
In 1979, Mother Theresa got the Nobel Peace Prize. She died on September 5, 1997.
Difficult words: call (to give a name to somebody), missionary (a person who goes to another country and teaches people about God), fascinated (when you think that something is very interesting and attractive), religious (connected to a belief in God).
What inspired Anjeze Gonxhe Bojaxhiu to become a missionary and care for the poor in India?
